Icons
image
Religious work of art
image, picture, representation
a sign or likeness that stands for an object by signifying or representing it either concretely or by analogy
i.e. a name, face, picture, or a person easily recognized as having some well-known significance or having certain qualities: an image or depiction, that represents something of greater significance through literal or figurative meaning, usually associated with religious, cultural, political, or economic standing.
generally a flat panel, cast in metal, carved in stone, embroidered on cloth, painted on wood, done in mosaic or fresco work, printed on paper or metal
most icons incorporate some calligraphic text - stylized.
Marily Monroe
McDonalds
alfred E Newman
reality TV, Lindsay Lohan's reality "documentary"
image • symbol • logo• picture• name• face• person• or building or other image that is readily recognized and generally represents an object or concept with great cultural significance to a wide cultural group. A representation of an object or person or that object or person may come to be regarded as having a special status as particularly representative of, or important to or loved by a particular group of people a place or a period in history.
symbols steepedd in culture
value or meaning
strike us on a very deep emotional level
deep emotions - heroism, fear, grief, joy
these images appeal to something we all feel
An important or enduring symbol
representation of a saint
Iconic is something recognizable, but yet bigger than life just slightly unattainable. whether its a saint guiding you to go to heaven or whether its a movie star in an iconic pose guiding you to some fantasy world. Something we can't have. But it's a symbol that gives you hope, it keeps you going. A strong attraction. Something we want that we can't quite reach.
Icons for me are a mix of all this. I'm sure they used real people to pose for old icons and saints (so why can't I use my old family photos to represent icons?)
I find photo booth pictures very iconic - 4 very recognizeable black and white pictures in a vertical row. Very good quality, clear pictures. And Shrinky Dinks both easily recognizable in themselves.
The images I use may not be recognizable by many as individual people, but I feel that they do represent a time period, a look, a culture, that many other people would be able to relate. The way I manipulate the images creates a certain mood and feeling, something you can feel, a transportation to another time, another era, something that words real can't express.
